Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 9, 2026
Unwritten is a journal, and what you write in it is yours alone. Smond AB, the company behind Unwritten, does not collect, receive, store or share anything you write or anything about how you use the app.
Your journal
Your journals, entries and their earlier versions are stored on your device.
If you have Unwritten Pro, they are also synced between your iPhone, iPad and Mac through iCloud, using Apple's CloudKit. They are stored in the private part of your own iCloud account, which only you can access. Smond AB has no server that sees your writing and no way to read it. Without Pro, your journal never leaves your device unless you export it.
Face ID, Touch ID and the app lock
If you turn on the lock, unlocking is handled entirely by your device. Unwritten only learns whether unlocking succeeded. Your face or fingerprint data never reaches the app, Smond AB, or anyone else.
Purchases
Unwritten Pro is bought through Apple's App Store. Apple processes the payment; Smond AB never receives your payment details, name or Apple ID. The app checks on your device, through Apple, whether Pro is active.
Data we collect
None. Unwritten has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking and no third-party services or SDKs.
If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in your device's settings, Apple may give us anonymous crash reports and usage statistics. These contain nothing you have written, and you can turn the sharing off at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements.
Exporting and deleting your data
You can export your entries at any time, as Markdown files or as an Unwritten backup. You can delete entries and journals in the app; deleting the app removes everything stored on that device. To remove the copy in iCloud, open Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage on iPhone or iPad (System Settings → your name → iCloud on a Mac), choose Unwritten and delete its data.
Children's privacy
Unwritten does not collect any data from anyone, including children.
Newsletter
This section covers the newsletter on this website, not the app. If you sign up, Smond AB stores your email address so we can tell you about Unwritten and send occasional updates. Nothing else is asked for.
The list is managed with Buttondown, which stores subscriber data in the United States under standard contractual clauses. Open and click tracking is turned off. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can ask us to delete your address at any time.
Who is responsible
Smond AB, Sweden, is responsible for this policy and, for the newsletter, is the data controller under the GDPR. You have the right to ask what we hold about you (for the app, nothing), to have it corrected or deleted, and to complain to the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY).
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a revised date.
