Unwritten is a quiet journal for iPhone, iPad and Mac: one page for every day.
Is Unwritten free?
Yes. Writing is always free: unlimited entries and journals, the calendar, search, stats, version history, the Face ID lock, import and export. Unwritten Pro adds iCloud sync between your iPhone, iPad and Mac, as a one-time purchase or a yearly subscription.
How does sync work?
With Pro, your journals sync through your own iCloud account, so make sure you're signed in to iCloud with the same Apple Account on each device, and that iCloud Drive is on. Changes usually arrive within a minute. If you edit the same entry on two devices before they've synced, Unwritten merges the edits; if they overlap, it shows you both versions so you can choose. Nothing is thrown away.
I bought Pro on another device
Pro is shared across your iPhone, iPad and Mac, and with your family through Family Sharing. If it doesn't show up, open the Pro screen and tap Restore purchases.
How do I get back an earlier version of an entry?
On iPhone, open the entry and tap the clock button. Everywhere, you can also choose Version History from an entry's stats or by touching and holding (or right-clicking) it in the entries list. Pick a version to restore it; the restore is saved as a new version, so it can be undone too.
How do I lock Unwritten?
Open Settings (the gear in the sidebar on iPhone and iPad, or Unwritten → Settings on a Mac) and turn on Lock with Face ID (or Touch ID or Optic ID). Unwritten then asks to unlock when you open it, and hides your entries in the app switcher.
Can I bring my Day One journal?
Yes. In Day One, export your journal as JSON (the .zip file is fine). In Unwritten, create a journal (or open an existing one with … in the journal menu), choose Import, pick Day One and select the file. Each entry is placed on its own date.
How do I export my entries?
Open the journal menu, tap … next to the journal, then its entries, and use Export: as a folder of Markdown files (one per entry, organised by year and month) that any notes app can read, or as an Unwritten backup that can be imported again.
Keyboard shortcuts
⌘T jumps to today, ⌘← and ⌘→ step between days, ⌃⌘S shows or hides the sidebar, and ⌘N creates a journal. On a Mac, ⌃⌥J opens today's page from anywhere. Hold ⌘ for a moment to see them all.
